Theressa P.
Holder
Oct 18, 1918 — Jun 30, 2018
Mrs. Theressa Penn Holder was born October 18, 1918 to the late Robert C. and Amanda K. Penn in Patrick County, VA. She departed this life at her home on Saturday, June 30, 2018. She attended the public schools in Winston-Salem and studied cosmetology at LaMae Beauty School under the instruction of Mrs. Ola Mae Forte. She owned and operated Kimberly Park Beauty Salon and was employed at Clark S. Brown and Sons Funeral Home. Her employment at Brown's Funeral Home lasted more than 50 years. Theressa was married to the late Joe H. Holder and from this union three children were born: Marvin, Melba and Sandra. Theressa was a member of Cleveland Avenue Christian Church where she served on the usher board for many years. Declining health dictated that she worship closer to home. She then joined her community church Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Holder had been a lifelong resident of the community and was a neighbor and friend to many members of the congregation. She enjoyed cooking and watching sports on television. She closely followed Michael Jordan and Chris Paul. She especially followed Chris Paul, because of the many days she spent working and talking with his great grandmother, Roma Jones at Cleveland Avenue Christian Church. She also enjoyed watching Tiger Woods play golf. She was watching Tiger on Saturday when Melba said Tiger made a birdie for her just prior to her passing. Theressa had many conversations about trains with Clark Brown, Sr. which cultivated a love for trains and traveling by train. She often traveled by train to visit family in Virginia, Maryland, Ohio and Massachusetts. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Holder was preceded in death by her son, Marvin Holder; nephew, Allen Coleman (who was like a son to her); sisters: Lillie Mae Penn, Beatrice Barclay and Pearl Thomas; brothers: Robert Lee Penn and Henry Penn; and Beatrice Rorie, who was like a dear daughter to her. She is survived by her daughters: Melba E. Holder and Sandra Holder; four grandchildren: Natalie Young, Damon Holder, Kenneth Holder and Wesley Holder; great grandson, Burrell Young, III; many other relatives and dear friends, Sadie Beal, Doris Hartsfield and Denise Hartsfield.
Family visitation will be Saturday, July 7, 2018 at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, 1400 Fitch Street, from 11:00 AM until 11:30 AM. Funeral service immediately following. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery.
