Obituary

Mr. Ransom L. Brown Jr. was born on December 19, 1937 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to Ethel Peterson Brown and Ransom L. Brown, Sr. who both preceded him in death. Growing up, Ransom was very close to his paternal grandmother, Lula Brown and remained so until her passing. Ransom was educated in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Public School System. He attended Carver High School where he was in the Glee Club and Band. Upon graduating from Carver High School in 1956, he went on to attend North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (a premier HBCU) where he majored in auto mechanics. Desiring to specialize in diesel mechanics, he continued his educational pursuits in Chicago IL. He lived there with his first wife before being drafted into the military. He was drafted and served in the United States Army from 1961-1963 during the Vietnam War. He graduated November 17, 1961 from the Company E-6th Battalion- 3rd Regiment Basic Training Course. He separated from service in November of 1963, a few days before the assignation of former President John F. Kennedy. Though he was a military veteran, he refused to take advantage of special military benefits and discounts because he did not want to take away from a veteran who really needed it. Having family in Philadelphia, PA he moved there for a brief period but did not like the "northern attitude" and he returned to North Carolina in 1965 where he began a 40+ year career as auto mechanic at Continental Can and then Rexam before retirement. Ransom was a man of his word in everything he did. He missed only two days from work his entire career. Both were to attend his daughter's college graduations. Ransom used his rich bass voice to glorify God through song. He was a longtime member and Trustee at Piney Grove Baptist Church until he joined United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church (UMMBC). At UMMBC he sang on the Male Chorus and the Sanctuary Choir. He attended the men's Sunday school classes, was a faithful worker in the kitchen, drove elder members to their medical appointments, and served on the senior usher board. He became a devoted helper to his wife who served on the flower club and usher board. Outside of the Church, Ransom had few hobbies. His order in life was God, family and being of service to others. He always looked forward to spending time with his two closet friends Charles Washington and Donald Glenn. Vacationing, visiting family, and refurbishing old cars were his favorite past-times. His prized possession was his 1958 Chevrolet Belair. Ransom remained active with the Carver Alumni Association, the West End Reunion Club, and the annual reunion with his work buddies. In 1952, he met the woman who would later become his life partner. In 1968, he began a 52-year courtship with the love of his life, Nancy Conner Fogle and became the bonus dad to her four children- Druscilla, Robin, Franklin (Jr.) and Sharon Fogle from which he affectionately became known as "Mr. June" to them, their friends and then to so many more. Ransom and Nancy married in 1994 and only by death have they been apart since that time. After a brief illness, Ransom made his soulful exit from this world on April 13, 2020 to live in peace eternally. In addition to his loving wife, Nancy, sister, Betty Hines; sister-in-law Janice Conner; he is survived by six children: Ransom Brown III; Deborah Brown; Franklin Fogle, Jr (Della); Druscilla Fogle, Robin Crawley (Greg); and Sharon Fogle; Grandchildren: Telano Pitts, Amber Fogle, Franklin Fogle, III; Torrie Holbrook (Tae'von); Farisma Fogle, Carlyn Crawley, Nigel Crawley; 14 great grandchildren; two nephews: Oscar Hines, Jr. (Willette) and Sean Hines; a God-Daughter, TenIsha Fields; Eight play sons; and a host of other relatives and acquaintances he encountered along his life's' journey.
