Obituary

On July 8, 2017, Otis Bivens Sellers went home to be with the Lord following a year-long illness. Born on December 5, 1934 in Anson County, North Carolina to Augustus and Mary (Bivens) Sellers, Otis was the youngest of fifteen children. He completed his primary and secondary education in the Anson County Public School system. Following his high school graduation, Otis moved to Baltimore, MD for a brief period before settling in Winston-Salem, NC where he lived his entire adult life.

Otis was an employee of R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company for more than 34 years. After accepting an early retirement offer, Otis directed his attention to a lifelong passion of cooking and launched O. B.'s Barbecue. In addition, to being an avid cook, he was a great outdoorsman known for hunting and gardening; always willing to share his bounty with others. He was an active supporter of the Winston-Salem State University HORN$ Giving Club and a proud season ticket holder for over 35 years. He rooted for both the Rams' football and basketball teams and loved attending the CIAA basketball tournament. Until his recent health challenges, Otis was also an active member of the Winston Lake Family YMCA.

A man of great faith, Otis was an active member of United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church for more than forty years serving on the Deacon Board, van ministry, security team and a founding member of the Spiritual Uplifters. Otis was an active and dedicated supporter of his community. He was a member of the Prince Hall Grand Lodge Free Masons for over fifty years and served as the treasurer of the George B. Williams Scholarship Fund since its inception in 1994, leading efforts to raise funds to provide scholarships to disserving students from Anson County North Carolina. In addition, he played an instrumental role in efforts to have the Oak Grove School in Winston-Salem listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Otis enjoyed vacationing and was a founding and longtime member of the Winston-Salem Traveler's Club.

A loving and dedicated family man, Otis was preceded in death by his first wife Mary (McClendon) Sellers. Left to honor his legacy are his loving wife of 45 years, Gladys B. Sellers; four adult children, Theotis Sellers, Ronald (Stacey) Sellers, Donald Sellers, and Melanie (Michael) Wells; three grandchildren Ryan Sellers, Morgan Sellers, and Zachary Sellers; one sister, Timmie Sellers, a host of nieces and nephews, friends and love ones. Otis' stories, laughter and generous spirit will be missed, but his legacy will live on in those whose lives he touched.

The homegoing service will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church. The family visitation hour will begin at 11 am followed by the service at 12 pm. The internment will be at Evergreen Cemetery immediately following the service.
