Obituary

Oscar Kinard Ledbetter was born in Winston-Salem, NC on March 3, 1951 to Naomi Ledbetter and James Reese.

He graduated from Atkins High School where he wrestled and played other sports. He continued his education at Winston-Salem State University. He worked at ITT Grinell as a nuclear radiation tester and later became a supervisor at Hanes Brands, where he retired.

Oscar attended St. John CME Church and served in many capacities including Trustee Board, Male Chorus, and the J.L. Pickens Choir. He was often seen frying fish at church functions or cooking with his brother and sisters. He also worked with his brother Ray and Tyrone to build the new St. John CME Church.

Oscar passed away quietly at his home on November 26, 2022 in his favorite chair, which he was known to be in frequently. He was also known to cook fatback and dumplings…which were a constant at Ledbetter Sunday dinners. His grandchildren were known to have bags of fatback instead of the typical toddler snacks. He was known to many as "Gus", "Rooster", or "Uncle Pop". He was also known to have many jokes, although many were real-life situations that he was a part of or created. He was known to live life and do whatever he chose to do.

He cherished his grandchildren and their happiness and did whatever it took to make sure they had what they wanted. He was never a stranger and would talk junk to anyone. He loved his brothers and sisters, and would often be seen on the front porch of mother's and his home. We will always remember the fun times and we hold them close to our hearts.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Naomi H. Ledbetter; father, James Reese; sisters Barbara Herring and Antoinette Hunt; brother, Jerry Ledbetter; and brothers-in-law, Donald Spencer and Nathaniel Fox.

Oscar leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife of 44 years, Sallie Hilliard Ledbetter; daughter, Diamond L. Cotton and son, Oscar K. Ledbetter, Jr. of Winston-Salem, NC. Five grandchildren, Lyric Cotton, Jamir Ledbetter, C.J. Cotton, Niara Rousseau, and NaOsha Rousseau-Ledbetter; also cherishing his memory are seven siblings, Ray Ledbetter, Jacqueline Spencer, Miriam (David) Wagner, Tyrone (Derreka) Ledbetter, Linda Fox, Bernadette (Vaughn) Booker, and Donna (Calvin) Hendrickson; two aunts, Evelyn Andrews and Aron Ledbetter; in-laws, Patricia (John) Cauley, Lucy (Garland) Brown, Charles Hilliard; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Public viewing will be from 12 PM until 6 PM, Friday, December 2, 2022 at Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral service 1:30 PM Saturday, December 3, 2022 at St. John CME Church, 350 NW Crawford PL, Winston-Salem, NC. The family will greet friends thirty minutes prior to service.
