O'laf Sorento Massenburg, born February 10,1960, in Florence County, South Carolina. O'laf was the only child born of Vera Jenkins Massenburg and Alex Clemmons Massenburg. O'laf went home to be with the Lord on December 10, 2025 peacefully enjoying one of his favorite athletic activities. A man of deep faith and strict discipline, he left a legacy of enormous love for all people, especially for his wife, son and extended family. He demonstrated and modeled triumph over adversity, passion and dedication to his work and the lives his patients entrusted to him.
O'laf was educated in the Franklin County Public School System followed by receiving his BA in Chemistry at Duke University and completing the physician assistant program at Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University. As a physician assistant, O'laf worked in many medical specialties and practices over his career and found his home and most cherished teammates at Rockingham County Health Department.
O'laf's faith was deeply rooted in service at Jones Chapel Missionary Baptist Church of Louisburg, NC where he gave his life to Christ as a young child. While attending Wake Forest University he quickly immersed himself at First Baptist Church, Winston-Salem, NC. There, he found his new christian family, where he served in the Spiritual Choir, Single's Ministry, met and married his wife, Deborah, and later became a Deacon and continued to serve until his death.
O'laf married the love of his life, Deborah Brown Massenburg, and together they built a family rooted in love and commitment. Their union was blessed with one son, who became the heart of his world. O'laf was preceded in death by his parents. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Deborah B. Massenburg and their son, Alexander Massenburg of Winston-Salem, NC.
He was also survived by his mother-in-law, Stella Brown, Bennett, NC, aunt, Ruth Johnson, Atlanta, GA, uncle, Daniel Massenburg, (Juanita) Durham, NC, aunt, Kate Jenkins, Philadelphia, PA, sister-in-law, Pamela Brown DeShazo (Joseph), niece, Chandler Simpson (Darnell) and great-nephew, Ashton Gray Simpson, Elon, NC and a host of cousins, dear friends and colleagues.
O'laf S. Massenburg lived a life filled with faith, love, discipline, kindness and integrity. He had a heart of gold and compassion for mankind. He modeled to his son and anyone who knew him the strength of a faithful, christian man. His life on this Earth was way too short, but without a doubt, he is at peace in the place he wanted to be, with our dear Lord and Savior. We can almost hear him saying, "thank you Jesus - I'm home".
