Obituary

On September 20, 2024 our beloved mother and grandmother, Nellie Louise Brown was called home to be with the Lord. She was born on June 6, 1939 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to the late Johnny Jackson Brown and Louise Shelton Brown.

Nellie graduated from Atkins High School and was a retired employee of Baptist Hospital, (now Atrium Health) Dietary Department. In the community, she was a longtime member of Mercy Seat Holy Church where she faithfully participated in many church activities.

With an entrepreneurial spirit, she operated the neighborhood "Candy House". Additionally she loved flowers and made floral arrangements for weddings. Not shy about expressing herself, she often did so through the poetry she wrote. She deeply loved her children and grandchildren and often prepared delicious meals for her family and catered meals for others, which was one of the ways she showered them with love. Traveling was another thing she enjoyed. She will be missed at her favorite Mayflower Restaurant.

Nellie was preceded in death by her parents; three grandsons, Corey Warren, Rashad Scott, and Warren Portis.

She leaves to cherish her legacy, five generations: four daughters, Cathy Tarver (Andrey), Chiquita McKay (Eric), Crystal Warren, and Cassandra Lilly; one son, Thomas Warren, Jr. (Rebecca); twelve grandchildren, Sainairia, Warren, Kim Warren, Anthony Warren, Latoya Warren, Larry Warren, Alexis Brown, Russell Scott (Janeka), Tene-ka Warren, Derek Warren McKay (Courtney), Stefon Watts, Jr. (Kelsey), Thomas Warren, III, and Tacora Backstrom (Alex); twenty-nine great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; and two great-great great grandchildren; aunt, Virginia Fisher; God daughter, Rashida Dobson; special childhood friend, Shirley Mitchell; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Public viewing will be from 12:00 PM until 6:00 PM, Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home.
