Obituary

Mrs. Maggie Smith Shepherd was born to the late Silas and Albertine Brawley Smith in Mooresville, North Carolina on April 24, 1918. She began her early Christian education at Watkins Chapel AME Zion Church in Mooresville. She married her childhood sweetheart, Arthur Shepherd, and to that union they were blessed with the birth of a baby girl, Mary Lee. Arthur Shepherd was then called to be the minister of The Church of Christ at 36th and Garland Avenue in Louisville, KY, and the couple relocated to that city. At the time of his death in 1982, the couple had been married for over 46 years.

In 1988, Mrs. Shepherd moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina. That move allowed her to live closer to her daughter, Mary Lee (Cloys) Cecil and her grandchildren. Her new hometown also offered the warm and welcoming Christian fellowship which she found as a member of Carver Road Church of Christ

She enjoyed hobbies of cooking, fishing, crocheting, gardening and writing poetry.

Maggie was a dedicated daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, sister, aunt and most importantly to her was being a member of the Church of Christ. She leaves a legacy of faithfulness to the Lord and his church. Her greatest wish would be for others to be lead to Christ by the example of her life as she obeyed Christ and his example; the absolute truth of the Bible. God's word was her guide and now her comforter. She had a great love for her family and a great forgiving heart.

Prior to declining health, Mrs. Shepherd faithfully attended church services. Family and Friends Day at church was a high time for her as she enjoyed the laughter, love and fellowship shared with members and friends.

Mrs. Maggie Smith Shepherd passed away at her home in Winston-Salem on Friday, July 15, 2016. following a brief period of illness. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Shepherd and two sisters, Lucille Smith and Mary Simelton.

Those family members who survive and who will forever cherish loving memories of her include her daughter, Mary (Cloys) Cecil; her grandchildren Cloys (Sandra) Cecil, Jr., Cynthia Cecil, Colin Cecil and Colina Stewart; her great grandchildren, Dr. Carresse Gerald-Twiggs (Thomas), Jared Cecil, Candie Rumph, Leland Stewart, Jamille Cecil, Constance Rumph, LeAngela Stewart, and Jamari Cecil; her great grandchildren, Cana Gerald, Amaria Davis and Carter Twiggs; a devoted nephew, Roy Lee (Dr. Charlene) Shepard and their son, Gregory; two devoted nieces, Ora Lee Carr and Bessie Simelton; special cousins with whom she spoke frequently; The Carver Road Church of Christ Family; several extended family members and many friends.
