Obituary

Lillie Mae Herbert Alford, daughter of the late Gussie and Betsy Herbert, was born in Seabrook, SC on October 17, 1940. After years of being true to her faith and committed to caring for others, she was granted eternal rest on September 5, 2025.

She received her early education in Seabrook, SC and continued her studies at Public School 22 from 9th–12th grade. Her love for others and giving nature, led her to a career in the health care field. She secured employment as a Home Health Aide in New Jersey City, NJ. After coming to Winston-Salem, NC, she worked as a Nursing Assistant at Pell Care Nursing Facility (Lutheran Nursing Home) from 1975–1995.

Lillie was a long-time and faithful member of Carver Road Church of Christ, formerly Castle-Heights Church of Christ. She was baptized in 1976. Lillie was actively involved in the Ladies' Bible class and various activities of the church. She was a God-fearing woman always putting the Lord first. She loved and was indeed loved by her church family.

Lillie loved and spent time in her garden, working on puzzles, and visiting with her neighbors. She had a love for her favorite TV shows, including for her, the Nightly News #1 anchor, Lester Holt, who always had her undivided attention. There was no talking to her when it came to this Chanel. And most proudly, she loved conversing with her twin sister, Willie Mae.

Those who preceded her in death include her parents; daughter, Vernice Alford; 8 siblings, Gussie Herbert, Mildred Simmons, Evelyn Antley, Florence Blue, Minnie Delbrage, Melvin Herbert, Cora Pryor, Buster Herbert and Leo Herbert.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her children: daughters, Karen Alford and Carolyn Murray, son, John Alford, Jr.; 7 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; one sister, Willie Mae Covington; one sister-in-law, Isabell Alford; special friends, Athenia Pouncey, Carolyn Love, Detrice Ingram, and Carol Weathers; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 AM, Thursday, September 11, 2025 at Carver Road Church of Christ, 4399 Carver School Road, Winston-Salem, North Carolina 27105. Interment at Gardens of Memory, Walkertown, North Carolina.
