Obituary

John Gregory Jones, age 71, affectionately known as "Greg" to his family and friends, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2026, in Greensboro, North Carolina, after a long illness.

Greg was born on March 2, 1955, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to the late John William Jones and Fern Felolia Fulp Jones.

A 1973 graduate of North Forsyth High School, Greg went on to earn his bachelor's degree from Wake Forest University in 1977 and later obtained his real estate license through Central Piedmont Community College. During his years at Wake Forest, Greg was an active member of the Afro American Society, Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, and Student Council. He also served as curator of the Student Art Collection, reflecting his lifelong appreciation for the arts.

Professionally, Greg worked as a mortgage underwriter for Dover and Monarch in Charlotte, North Carolina. Beyond his career, he devoted eight years to mentoring as a Big Brother to Brandon Lockhart, a role that reflected his generous spirit and commitment to helping others.

Greg found joy in painting, drawing, music, dancing, singing, and laughter. His artistic talent, warm sense of humor, and vibrant personality brought happiness to those who knew him.

Greg was the second of four children. He is survived by his sisters, Deborah E. Jones of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Tammy C. Johnson (Jesse) of McLeansville, North Carolina; and by his former wife and life-long family friend, Deborah R. Jones of Harrisburg, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Joseph William Jones ("Joey"), who passed away in July 2008.

Greg also leaves to cherish his memory his aunts, Shirley Dodd, JoAnn Sturdivant, and Mae France Jones; his great-aunt, Ella Mae Fulp; his nieces, Ashley Mathis Boston (RahSheem), Kerri Jones, and Erica Jones; his nephews, Jesse Johnson III ("Jay") and Chris Jones; his great-niece, Lola Mathis; his great-nephews, Blake Bush and Javier Jones; and his godson, Joel Lowe.

He is also lovingly remembered by a host of cousins in the Jones, Fulp, Fulton, and Harris families. The family extends special appreciation to his cousin, Josetta Timberlake, whose encouragement and companionship continually lifted Greg's spirits. They also recognize the many lifelong friends from North Forsyth High School, Wake Forest University, and his Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity brothers, whose friendships and shared memories meant so much to him.

Greg's legacy lives on through the love he shared, the lives he touched, and the countless memories he leaves with family and friends. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
