Herlenia S.
Jackson
d. Jun 13, 2025
Herlenia Sanders Jackson, a beloved matriarch, was called home by her heavenly Father on June 13, 2025, at the age of 94. Born in Society Hill, South Carolina, to the late Oceola and Emma Sanders, she built a legacy grounded in faith, perseverance, and family.
Her spiritual foundation was laid in her youth at Bethesda Baptist Church in Society Hill, where she was baptized. Upon moving to Winston-Salem in 1949, she became a devoted and longstanding member of Fellowship Baptist Church, and later, Pleasant Abyssinian Baptist Church where she faithfully served on the Nurses Board and the Senior Choir.
Herlenia faced life's challenges with courage and tenacity. She was educated at Rosenwald High School in Society Hill and continued her studies at Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston-Salem. Her journey was one of continuous ascent- rising from humble beginnings as the daughter of a sharecropper in South Carolina to becoming a homeowner and sending her children off to college.
She was married to the late General Jackson for 66 cherished years. Their love story began through a family connection, introduced by her brother, Otis, and flourished from a shared passion for basketball in their youth. She was a dedicated mother who loved her sons dearly. When they were young, she was often heard throughout the neighborhood calling them to come home at sunset. She supported them in all their endeavors. She was also a devoted daughter and sister.
Professionally, she was a dedicated employee for over 30 years, demonstrating unwavering commitment and integrity in all she did.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her beloved son, General Jackson II, and two cherished grandchildren, Anjail and Matthew El-Amin, as well as her siblings Hattie Mae Perkins, Queenester Cleveland, Bessie Mae Kennedy, Christine Ketter, Wilhelmenia Byers, Jessie, Loma, Otis, Floyd, and Joseph Sanders.
She is lovingly remembered by her sons, Fleming (Cassaundra) El-Amin of Winston-Salem and Joseph (Valerie) Jackson of Durham; daughter-in-law Lillian (Hiawatha) Griffith of Winston-Salem; sister, Dorothy Joyner of Society Hill, SC; ten grandchildren, General Jackson III, Monica (Toma) Banner, Mia Jackson, Damanian Terry of Winston-Salem, NC, Fleming ( Zunilda) El-Amin II of Hanover, MD, Jameelah Hayes of Cary, NC, Joi and David Jackson of Durham, NC, Salimah (Rodney) Witherspoon of Garner, NC, and Abraham (Laura) El-Amin of Denver, CO. Her legacy continues through 21 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Herlenia's life was a testament to faith, family, and fortitude. She will be deeply missed and eternally cherished.
Funeral service for Mrs. Jackson will be held at 12 noon on Monday, June 23, 2025 in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. The family will greet friends at 11:30 AM. Interment will be in Piedmont Memorial Gardens.
