Elizabeth D.
Griffin
Feb 2, 1925 — Mar 22, 2019
Elizabeth Dukes Griffin departed this life and entered the Kingdom of God on March 22, 2019. She was born in Hartsfield, SC to the late Joe and Irene Smith Dukes on February 2, 1925 and moved to Winston-Salem at the age of three. She was the oldest of seven children. All six of her siblings preceded her in death: Lester Dukes, David Dukes, Rosita Evans, Joe Dukes, Dorothy Carpenter and a baby sister who died as a child, Ella Mae Dukes.
Elizabeth was educated in the local school system and attended Atkins High School. She was employed by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and once she started her family, she turned to domestic work and became very devoted to several families. Elizabeth married Bennie Lee Griffin and together they raised ten children, seven sons and three daughters.
In addition to her parents and siblings, Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Bennie Lee and five children: Ricky Nelson "Chick", Dennis James "Goochie", Debbie Denise, Bennie Lee, Jr. "Piggy", Tillman Dukes "Tim" and an infant daughter, Marilyn. Her long-time companion, Arthur Wilson "Yutt/Holiday", also preceded her in death.
Elizabeth leaves behind a legacy of no-nonsense and stood firmly in her beliefs. She had a kind heart and opened her home up to many who needed a meal or a place to lay their head throughout her life.
Left to cherish many dear memories of Elizabeth are her surviving children: Elizabeth Griffin Minor, Richard Leon (Shirley) Dukes, Randolph Paul (Ronda) Griffin and Michael Lee Griffin; a host of grandchildren, great grands and great-great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Ronda M. Griffin; a son-in-law, Charles Minor; two brothers-in-law: William Griffin and Willie (Ernestine) Griffin; two sisters-in-law: Mildred Griffin and Carol Griffin; nieces, nephews and other devoted family and friends, especially Mrs. Kathy and Judy (Joe) Southern.
