Obituary

Clifton William Prince, a devoted husband, father and beloved educator departed this life on March 4, 2025. Clifton was born June 19, 1946 in Baltimore, Maryland to two loving parents, the late Clifton Thomas and Mary Magadelene Prince.

He grew up in Pumphrey, a close-knit community in northern Anne Arundel County. Lovingly known as "Cliff" and "Mr. Prince", he was an active member of St. John United Methodist Church where he joined as a child. He was involved in numerous ministries over the years including the Church Administrative Counsel, taught Sunday School, co-led Vacation Bible School and Youth Ministry where he drove the van every Friday to pick up the children; a member of the United Methodist Men, and sang in the Mass Choir.

Mr. Prince, an avid learner, graduated from Wiley H. Bates High School and attended Morgan State College, where he earned his degree in Art Education in 1968. He later pursued his master's degree in Art Education from Towson State College in 1973, and from The Johns Hopkins University he earned both a master's degree in Guidance and Counseling in 1977, and a certificate in Administration and Supervision in 1981.

He had a distinguished career in education where he touched the lives of countless students and colleagues. He enjoyed education so much that after he retired from an illustrious career in Maryland, he re-entered the workforce after relocating to North Carolina. While in North Carolina he was a guidance counselor and assistant principal in several middle schools and high schools for 17 Years. He felt there was a tremendous need for retirees to fill gaps in schools and he was able to "hit the ground running". He was a visionary leader and mentor who dedicated his life to inspiring students and fostering creativity in education. His legacy lives on in the students he inspired and the countless lives he enriched.

Mr. Prince's nearly 50-year career in education began in the classroom as a Middle School Art Teacher, transitioning to a Middle School Guidance Counselor; eventually moving into administration as an Assistant Principal and Principal, where he remained until his retirement.

After relocating to Winston-Salem, North Carolina he was actively involved at St. Paul United Methodist Church as a Trustee, served on the Church Council and the United Methodist Men. He enjoyed singing in the Male Chorus and Mass Choir and with his passion for education taught Sunday School, Bible Study and orchestrated Vacation Bible School for 13 years. He was a strong advocate for the collaboration between St. Paul and Centenary United Methodist Church's TRUTH (True Relationships Uniting Transformed Hearts) Café.

He enjoyed life with his family and never missed an opportunity to travel to the beach, the mountains, Washington, D.C. or to Atlanta. Some of his favorite past times were cutting the grass, washing his cars, fixing things around the house, listening to jazz, reading, drawing, painting or playing with his "toys"; especially his candy apple red Ferrari F430. His love of foreign cars was like no other. Although he enjoyed the finer things in life, he continually stressed the importance of "sticking to your budget" and "living below your means". You could always count on him to teach us how to stretch a dollar, which we all loved him for. Cliff always remembered his roots and continued to give back so that others could profit from the wealth of his experience from which God blessed him.

Mr. Prince was a born-again Christian who married his childhood sweetheart, Evangeline, 54 years ago. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Evangeline; son, Dr. Clifton Jarrett Prince of Canal Winchester, OH; daughter, Angela Prince Hickman of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Angelise Danyelle Prince; Contia Janetta Prince, Christopher Jermaine Hickman, Clifton Miles Prince, Taylor Janelle Hickman; great-granddaughter, Madison Baleigh Prince-Pollard; brother, Gregory Prince of Baltimore, MD; sister-in-law, Teresa Woods of Greensboro, NC; brothers-in-law, Zachary Taylor and Mark Wright, both of Shelby, NC, and a host of other relatives and friends.
