Carnella
Andrews
Nov 10, 1931 — Sep 24, 2024
Carnella Murphy Andrews passed away on September 24, 2024 surrounded by her loved ones. Carnella was born in Shelby, North Carolina on November 10, 1931 to Sampson and Willie Mae Rhodes Murphy who preceded her in death.
Her family would eventually move to Winston-Salem during her early childhood years, and although throughout her life she would spend considerable time in other locations, Winston Salem was Home!
She went to Columbia Heights Elementary School and was a graduate of Atkins High School class of 1950. Carnella received her Bachelor's degree from Winston-Salem Teachers College in 1954. She further studied to receive a certification in the special education program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the guidance program at North Carolina Agriculture and Technical State University, in Greensboro, North Carolina. She taught elementary grade levels first, second and third grade for many years before her career as an educator in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system with 33 years of service came to an end. After she retired, she operated the 25th Street Coin Laundry for 21 years.
Carnella lived her life on purpose and by principal. She was very disciplined and committed to working hard to achieve her goals and amass the things that mattered in life. She was a traveler and always open to the adventure of trying something new! She loved the finer things in life, and would spare no expense for a beautifully tailored suit, and a fierce pair of "5" inch black heels. The same would go for her home. Her "sanctuary" priceless, inside and out. She appreciated and protected and preserved every plant and flower she grew and was given. She took much pride in having and maintaining the most beautiful yard on the block because for the most part, she had a part in installing almost every intricate part of it. And yes, every spring was the marker for the new crop of beautiful ferns to line her planters. Rose bushes and Marigolds and in the fall would come the Mums. What a beautiful sight to see!
Carnella was a faithful member at Mars Hill Baptist Church for over 80 years. There she served as hostess, usher, Ladies Working Society, Pulpit Committee, Trustee and served as Chair for several other committees. She was a member of Winston Salem State University Alumni Association, Brown Chapter and would go on to become "Miss Alumni" 1961. She was also a member of Iota Phi Lambda, the first African American Greek-lettered business sorority established by African American business women and a member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter #608.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers, Barney, Lawrence, Sam, Albert, and John Murphy; sisters, Pauline M. Ellis, Beatrice M. Armstrong, Emma M. Young and Christine M. Little; and her former husband, Daniel W. Andrews, Jr.
Those left to cherish her memories are son, Daniel W. Andrews, III (Felicia); and Granddaughter Brizheet all of Greensboro, NC.; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Public viewing will be from 12:00 PM until 6:00 PM, Friday, October 4, 2024 at Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral service 11:30 PM, Saturday, October 5, 2024 in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. The family will receive friends thirty-minutes prior to service. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery.
