Bernice
Reynolds
Nov 8, 1928 — Apr 25, 2023
Bernice Nicholson Reynolds, daughter of the late Earnest and Ella Nicholson, was born November 8,1928 in Robeson County, North Carolina. She was the eight of nine children. Bernice was the God daughter of her Spiritual Godparents Parents: Doc and Cora Turner. Bernice completed her primary and secondary education in Robeson County, North Carolina. Bernice trained to become a Bank Teller in Winston Salem, North Carolina where she began her career at First Union National Bank. She retired from Mechanics and Farmers Bank, the oldest Black owned bank in the United States.
Bernice was indeed the "Virtuous Woman" described in Proverbs 31 of the Holy Bible. Everyone who was blessed to visit Bernice in her home was truly anointed because the Lord had ordered their steps to go in her office and sit down at "The Round Table". It was in her kitchen where Bernice was at her best serving up over sized portions of wisdom, laughter and love. At the Round Table is where the magic happened! Bernice would impart counsel, knowledge and an overabundance of insight on everything from individual issues, religion, relationships to politics. It did not matter how sad, worried or confused you were when you arrived to Bernice's home once you took your seat at the Round Table she had you seeing the issue in a different light. She would remind you that "All things work together for the good, of them that Love the Lord and are called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28)
Bernice accepted Christ at an early age and was truly a woman of God. She was known for her virtue, strength, wisdom, grace, and character. As a young child she was baptized at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Lumberton, North Carolina. For over sixty years, Bernice was a dedicated member of Shilo Baptist Church in Winston Salem, North Carolina. There, she served as a Trustee and was very active in many other ministries and programs.
Bernice was a lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the National Council of Negro Women, Incorporated, the Skyland Senior Citizen's Club, Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) and Eastern Stars.
Early Tuesday morning on April 25, 2023, Ms. Bernice Nicholson Reynolds transitioned from labor to reward. On her deathbed Bernice said that "she and the Lord had decided that the Lord's Will be done." At that point Bernice looked up at all those in the room and gave a big, serene smile. Showing that she had the Lord's Peace that surpasses all understanding. Her last words were a request, she asked to hear the spiritual "Rough Side of the Mountain" by Reverend F.C. Barnes. She was preceded in death by her 4 brothers: Johnnie, Elmer, Ezra (Ed), and Harvey Nicholson. 3 sisters: Geneva Nicholson, Lorena Bradley and Dora Sinclair
Bernice Nicholson Reynolds lived a full life surrounded by family and friends.
She is survived by her brother Wardell Nicholson of Buffalo, NY, four nieces: Juanita Miller, Mary McDonald, Shirley Scott and Sheila Adams and three nephews: Gregg Bradley, Thomas Holliday, William Holliday, a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at Shiloh Baptist Church. The family will greet friends at 10:30 AM. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
